“The Kansas City Business Journal rekindles an occasional series profiling a local architect’s favorite structure in Kansas City. We visit with Greg Finkle, president at Overland Park-based Finkle + Williams Architecture.
His favorite building: 2345 Grand, formerly known as the IBM Plaza and now home to Lathrop & Gage LLP. It sits at the northern edge of Crown Center.
Overview: The building is presumed to be designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Finkle said. It opened in 1977, but Mies passed away in 1969, having the project completed by his office, Fujikawa Conterato Lohan & Associates.
The 28-story building is considered to embody the modern and international architecture style, Finkle said.
“The major international style principles are kind of around volume rather than mass and balance rather than symmetry. In other words, a building can be perceived to be balanced even though it may not be symmetrical. … And then one of the other major things is the lack of ornamentation, so it’s just a straightforward building.”
